There are so many products out there, it can seem impossible to choose. Oils, capsules, patches, cosmetics and sprays.

Two of the most common products are CBD oils and CBD capsules, as these were some of the first to hit the market. With their vast popularity, it is reasonable to narrow it down to a choice between these two products if you’re about to use CBD for the first time.

CBD Oils vs. CBD Capsules: How to Choose

When it comes to CBD capsules vs CBD oils, there are several things you need to consider. First of all, you need to think about why you are using CBD in the first place. If you are using CBD for general purposes and overall balance, both oils and capsules may be able to offer what you’re looking for.

Relating to this is the idea of bioavailability. Different products are processed by the body in different ways. We will talk a little more about this later, but it is generally true when comparing CBD oils and CBD capsules that the sublingual tinctures (oils) are faster. Oral CBD Sprays can be even faster and CBD Patches also take effect quickly.

Then there is the matter of convenience. All of us lead busy lifestyles, so it depends which method of CBD you can see fitting easily into your routine. Some of us will be able to take a CBD capsule alongside our daily supplements in the morning, while others won’t mind taking an extra minute or two out of their day to take a sublingual oil. If you travel a lot, a non-liquid option may be the best as it won’t leak.

Discreteness is also an issue for some people. If you are going to be taking multiple servings throughout the day, you may need to take CBD at work. The prying eyes of co-workers or passers-by might trouble you, in which case a subtle option like capsules or even gummies is ideal.

A few final things to consider when fighting the ‘CBD capsules vs CBD oil’ debate are price, availability, and potency. Not all products have a huge range of strengths available on the market, in which case you may be pressured into buying CBD oils — of which there is an enormous variation. Of course, you’ll need to take into consideration your budget as well, as price variations can be massive

CBD Oil vs CBD Capsules: The Case for Oils

CBD oil, sometimes referred to as a CBD tincture, consists of cannabinoid extracts that have been suspended in an inert oil. This is usually MCT or coconut oil, but can be others.

How do you use it?

Taking CBD oil is easy. Most bottles come with a dropper attached; simply gather up some oil into the dropper, place a few drops beneath your tongue, and hold it there for around 90 seconds. Here, the cannabinoids and terpenes are absorbed directly into your bloodstream where it can impact the endocannabinoid system quickly and effectively.

Afterward, simply swallow the oil. There are other ways to take CBD oils (such as adding them to food), but this changes the bioavailability of the oil.

The bioavailability of sublingual administration is higher than some other methods; however, the bioavailability is still only reported to be about 12-35%, so you’re still not getting the full 100% of the active component.

Advantages of CBD Oil

  • There are a vast number of oils available out there. The variety in strengths is very impressive, meaning that there will definitely be a CBD oil available to suit you. Start extremely low in terms of serving size and work your way up slowly.
  • By using a dropper, you can create a serving that is more accurately tailored to you.
  • Bioavailability is higher than with capsules. This makes sublingual oils ideal for general usage; they are quite an adaptable method that can be used for a range of balancing properties.
  • Although the sublingual usage may not be immediately familiar to you, it is easy to get the hang of and thus easy to put into your daily routine.

Disadvantages of CBD Oil

  • Many users dislike the taste and texture of CBD oil. It can be very raw and earthy, unless flavouring has been added. This can make it hard to take on a daily basis.
  • Carrying around a bottle of liquid is inconvenient and risky. There is a chance the bottle may leak in your bag, which makes CBD oil inappropriate for traveling or taking to work for interspersed servings throughout the day.
  • It is not a subtle way to take CBD. Having to take out the bottle and drop oil under your tongue is pretty conspicuous, so if you want to go unnoticed, don’t take CBD oil in public.

CBD Oil vs CBD Capsules: The Case for Capsules

CBD Capsules are made in a similar way to regular CBD oils, by extracting the ingredients from hemp and then suspending them in a gel capsule. They are popular because they are so reminiscent of any other pill we take.

How do you take them?

To take a CBD capsule, simply pop one in your mouth and swallow with a glass of water. It’s just like any other pill you’re used to taking.

Advantages of CBD Capsules

  • Capsules are incredibly easy to take. If you already take vitamins or supplements, it’s easy to add a daily CBD capsule into the mix.
  • The dosage could not be any easier. Each dose is already measured out for you in each capsule – there’s no guesswork involved.
  • Capsules are ideal for traveling a lot, as they can’t leak in your bag and are very easy to carry around.
  • They are very inconspicuous, and you likely won’t be noticed for taking one at work or in public. Much more subtle than CBD oils!
  • Since some people can’t cope with the taste of CBD oil, capsules provide a taste-free option.

Disadvantages of CBD Capsules

  • Capsules are not yet as widely available as CBD oils, so you can’t always find the exact strength you need.
  • Bioavailability is lower for capsules than with oils, and the dose is less potent.

Final Thoughts: CBD Oil vs CBD Capsules

At the end of the day, CBD capsules and CBD oils come in at around the same price. With cost not becoming a large factor, you will have to look into other things when it comes to choosing between them.

CBD oils might be more suited to you if you are looking for a fast-acting option, and if you don’t mind the raw taste of CBD. Capsules will be more your thing if you are after subtlety and convenience.
