Cannabidiol, commonly known as CBD and cannabinol which is known as CBN are both compounds contained within the cannabis plant known as cannabinoids. Cannabinoids are chemicals that have the ability to interact with a series of receptors in the body that is now referred to as the endocannabinoid system.

While CBD is now a growing phenomenon with CBD being infused with all manner of different food and beauty products. CBN is not as well-known and is not widely available, the legal status of the two cannabinoids varies in jurisdictions around the world. Many people around the world use CBD to ease their symptoms of chronic pain and anxiety.

There has been a minimum amount of research into the efficacy of safety for humans to consume CBN within food supplements or via a medical device. Despite the small amount of evidence that has been obtained to date, the early evidence suggests that CBN may have the potential to decrease pain and act as a sleep aid.

What are the benefits of CBD?

CBD is not psychoactive and does cause those who use it to get high. Many CBD users use it daily to help manage pain, anti-inflammation, anxiety and sleep problems. Research about the benefits of CBD is still in its infancy but early studies are showing increasingly positive results.

Common forms to that are used to take CBD include:

CBD Vapes

CBD Oils

CBD Capsules

CBD Patches

CBD Creams

Anxiety & Depression Management

There have been some early studies that indicate that CBD could be a potential alternative to traditional medications for treating anxiety and depression.

A Brazilian study that was carried out in 2019, investigated the effect of CBD on people about to make a public speech. The study used a mix between placebos and doses of CBD between 150mg and 600mg. The researchers discovered that those who were given a dose of 300mg had their anxiety levels substantially decreased.

Neuroprotection and Reduction of Seizures

A range of studies that were conducted in 2020 found that CBD could be a treatment option for a range of neurogenerative diseases. There is currently research being undertaken to assess to viability of using CBD to treat diseases such as;

  • Parkinson’s Disease
  • Alzheimer’s Disease
  • Epilepsy
  • Multiple Sclerosis

CBD under the guise Epidiolex has been approved by the MHRA in the UK and the FDA in the United States to treat Lennox-Gastaut and Dravet syndromes which are two very rare forms of epilepsy.

Sleep Management

There are many people who report that CBD improves the quality of their sleep. There is more scientific proof that CBD can improve sleep quality, however more research is required to fully comprehend the potential of using CBD as a sleep aid.

Pain Relief

There has been research undertaken that has discovered that CBD can be effective in reducing the symptoms of chronic pain by interacting with the body’s endocannabinoid system.

What are the benefits of CBN?

CBN is made via the breakdown of the psychoactive cannabinoid THC. CBN is mildly psychoactive but it doesn’t produce the infamous high in the same manner as THC.

There hasn’t been as much research carried out into the benefits of CBN as there has CBD and at this moment in time there is a limited amount of evidence and data that examine the benefits of CBN. CBN products are commonly used as sleep aids, however more research needs to be carried out to substantiate these claims.

Conclusion

Both CBD & CBN are cannabinoids contained within the cannabis plant and both have prospective benefits when used appropriately. However, more research needs to be carried out investigating the efficacy and safety of both compounds before they can be considered a definitive medication for specific ailments.
