Back pain can be debilitating and can gradually destroy your quality of life, impairing your ability to enjoy your free time. Back pain can be related to nerve pain or tissue damage, so it can be difficult to ascertain precisely what the issue is.

Many people are beginning to turn to CBD to ease their pain or inflammation in a particular area that is causing them grief. CBD is an abbreviation of cannabidiol which is one of over 100 cannabinoids that are contained within the cannabis plant. CBD doesn’t get you high as it is not a psychoactive compound. It is THC, which stands for tetrahydrocannabinol, that is the compound within the cannabis plant that causes the user to get high and initiates the feeling of being high, which cannabis has become so infamous for throughout popular culture.

If you are looking to use CBD to manage back pain or any other type of chronic pain, consuming the CBD using a pain relief patch can be an excellent way to ensure that you receive a standardised dose, and the CBD is delivered efficiently. When you apply a CBD patch to the skin, the patch enables the CBD to be absorbed into the bloodstream as the CBD passes through a concentration gradient.

CBD patches are an extremely convenient and discreet way of using CBD, however using a CBD patch is a lot less mainstream than CBD oil. This means that some people remain sceptical about the efficacy of using a CBD patch.

Does a CBD Patch Work?

CBD pain relief patches are certainly as effective as taking CBD orally using a CBD ingestible product. CBD patches offer several benefits compared to using CBD ingestible products such as CBD oils or CBD capsules.

A study that was carried out in 2018 found that CBD patches have several advantages over CBD products that are ingested.

The researchers who conducted the study outline that CBD that is taken orally is often metabolised by the body before the CBD begins to circulate through your bloodstream. CBD that is taken through the skin such as a patch for back pain, does not have to go through this process and is not broken down by the metabolism, meaning that a higher percentage of the CBD enters the bloodstream. This ultimately means that more CBD enters your bloodstream, increasing the likelihood of your pain decreasing.

CBD pain patches are formulated and designed to last for a full 24 hours. This means they are designed to stay active and remained attached to your skin for an entire day. The slower release of the CBD over an extended timeframe. The slow but steady dose ensures that the CBD targets the precise area that is affected by the pain. One benefit of using CBD patches for back pain is that you only have to apply the patch once in the morning, whereas with CBD oil or CBD cream, you have to ensure you take several doses throughout the day to make sure you are ingesting the optimal amount of CBD. In many people’s busy schedules, having to remember to take CBD is not ideal and using a CBD patch negates the risk of forgetting to consume your ideal daily dose of CBD.

CBD pain patches are most effective when you apply them to a venous part of the body. The most effective places to place a pain patch is on the inside of your wrist or outside of your upper arm. A venous part of your body is an ideal place to stick the pain patch as it means that the absorption into the bloodstream is faster and therefore, the CBD is distributed throughout the body at a faster rate.

There was research that was carried out in 2020 that found that topical CBD could be an effective way to decrease inflammation and blocking pain in the recovery of back injuries. Decreasing inflammation is crucial in treating back pain, as inflammation is often a pivotal cause of back pain. The research also found that nerve pain could be relieved by using a topical CBD product such as a CBD patch. Topical CBD applications such as a CBD patches have been proven to promote muscle relaxation in many chronic pain disorders.

There has yet to be substantial research into the effectiveness of CBD patches. However, by conducting a Randomised Clinical Trial or Study could provide the initial evidence to prove that CBD patches are a viable method of treating inflammation and issues such as back pain.

How to choose the best CBD Patches

There are some key criteria to assess when you are choosing the CBD patch you want to use. Safety, quality and brand transparency are all integral when selecting a CBD patch or any CBD product for that matter.

Finding out how the pain patch is made is also crucial. The most effective CBD patches have the CBD and other active ingredients formulated within the patch’s adhesive. This is the most modern and effective way to use CBD patches. Matrix patches are similar to a sticker and the impact is not as substantial.

How to use CBD Patches

CBD patches are incredibly easy to use and are discreet. With a CBD patch that has the CBD contained within the adhesive, it couldn’t be any simpler:

  1. Simply remove the patch from its packaging and then place it on the outside of the top of your arm.
  2. keep the CBD patch on for at least 24 hours and longer if the packaging indicates that this is the optimal timeframe to wear the patch.
  3. Once the 24 hours has passed, it is advisable to apply another patch. This is because CBD has a cumulative effect, and it takes a substantial period of time for the CBD to take effect.

If you are new to CBD, it is probably advisable that you start with a 10mg CBD patch. This is because when first using CBD, it is always best to start with a low dose and gradually build up the dose until you find the optimal dose for you. If you find that you require a more significant dose, then you can try our 20mg CBD patches

Are CBD Patches Safe?

CBD is considered to be safe and even the common side effects are not serious. The side effects include diarrhoea, loss of appetite, dry mouth and weight loss.

There are a handful of instances where CBD can interact with prescription medications and it is always best to speak with your doctor if you have any concerns or are on prescription medication. It is also not recommended that you use CBD if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.

If you are taking statins, it may not be a good idea to use CBD pain patches, or any CBD product.

Is CBD Legal?

CBD is legal in the UK assuming it doesn’t contain restricted cannabinoids such as THC or CBN.

Ingestible CBD products such as CBD oils and CBD capsules will have to comply with the impending Novel Food Legislation that comes into force on 31 March 2021 and will be enforced by the Food Standards Agency. This is one reason why pain patches are a particularly interesting delivery method, as they do not need to comply with the Novel Food legislation.
